We've now been releasing tracks from UK electronic wunderkid Vim! for, well, seven and a half years, on both .MOD and this 'new-fangled' .MP3. That's quite a long time, certainly by netlabel standards. And since we started up, he's released albums on Surgery Records, remixes on Merck and Carpark, and a host of EPs on Monotonik. So, we're now delighted to be able to present an MP3 version of his recent, _extremely_ smart, _extremely_ limited edition CDR, 'A Random Collection Of Consonants', on...

We've been releasing maze-like, beautifully complex music from quiet, enigmatic UK idm artist Vim! since 1996 - thus, we're heading towards his 10-year anniversary on Monotonik, insanely enough. With that in mind, it's only natural that there might be some maturation of style, coming, as it does, after his real-life album and remix releases on Surgery, Merck, Carpark, and others - the hazy, redolent chiptune sinewave sounds of 'Perpetual Autumn EP' show how we all grow up and chill out somehow,...

What's with the title? Well, it's 'Chip Van Winkle' in the sense that Vim!'s output is still roundly slept on. When, oh when, is someone going to sign him up for his major record label debut, Esther? In the meantime, we don't have any funny-looking vegetables for you, but we do have this compilation of the Vim! .MOD 'chiptune' (that's .MODs using very small instrument samples, fact fans!) output from the past few years. Highlights include any number of messed-up 'Ghost And Goblins'-influenced...

More rewording and reordering as Substance takes elements from two previous releases (Tek's mp3 "Benedict" and Prob+Ebb's "Stylez") and merges and melds to come up with this mellifluous hybrid. It's fun to play with sounds, isn't it? Watch out for a simultaneous/near-simultaneous Malik remix of "Stylez" on Theralite (http://pigforce.warande.net/theralite), incidentally.. mmm, synchronicity can be so constructive, hm?

*EXCLUSIVE* - tragic news, my non-magical friends. I have word from the dastardly wretches at no'mo' that they've kidnapped Monotonik's friendly and docile Vim! and subjected him to Chas 'n Dave records until he remixes a popular cheesy garage record. The result, regurgitated at me? Vim vs. Awful Dodgy - 'Rehash' (1380k). Hear the original ici. Poor old Vim!, eh? No'Mo' release #13 shows they continue to be harsh taskmasters.. damn them!

Vim! almost went away a couple of months back, but thankfully he didn't quite finish with the scene as he said, and he's still hanging around, to increasing acclaim. Here's one of his latest tracks, exclusive to Mono, and it's another cracker - tight Squarepusher-style percussive shenanigans with an original edge. Ken Dodd, for those not in the know, is a very strange English comedian with protruding teeth, a 'tickling stick', and a very strange.. attitude. So the title fits, then? :)

The debut EP from rather way-out Mono member Vim!, this serves as a showcase for his, well, totally original style. There sure as hell ain't many tunes like this coming out, and it makes a refreshing change to hear something different. Even if "Your Cup Of Tea" is so far out, it makes 4T Thieves' ambient madness sound relatively normal. As far as Mono HQ remembers, Vim! told us this track was composed using all of his homegenerated samples. Mad nuttah. :)

Already out on 'limited dub plate' lha-archive release, but only available to the very luckiest of Amiga owners, this storming intelligent drum+bass track now comes out via official Mono methods. Turn those speakers _up_, sonny, before we come round and tell you to turn them up some more. And watch out for a "Minimal Response EP" from the utterly charming blonde Substance-abuser.

Well, after the controversialness that was the last Mono211 release by Taro, here comes something that's guaranteed to soothe damaged nerves. As any fule kno, groove is in the heart, and Meester Vim! has it up to his eyeballs. Well, eyeball sockets - he donated his eyes to medical research some time ago and nowadays composes using his long antennae that he's grown from his gaping eye sockets. He makes strange clicking noises too, and if you listen carefully, the noise that sounds a little like...

The return of the Mack, wouldn't you know it, and it's with a brand-new composed jungle track. Mortimer reckons b-boy science is the way to go, but the drum n' bass still puts us in our place, huh? Please note that this is numero duo in the 'mono-back-on-track' series. And watch out for more Mortimer Twang stuff on Mono soon. If you would.

Quiet, please. If I could have your attention? Finland's entry to this year's Eurovision Song Contest is "Phonk Phaq". The orchestra will be conducted by some blunted kidz from the ghetto. There will be a fine jungle remix courtesy of Substance's brain (tm). And the lord shall be happy, and he will decree that it was good. And people will cherish and enjoy this Mono release forever. Amen.

Long-awaited and finally here+now, one of Vim's best tracks from earlier this year gets a full release. one of the man himself's favourite tracks, it seems almost too elegant to be digital, don't you think? playing with the idiom, he twists it round our finger and spits out the drums again, all filtered, spinning round and round.. hmm, sometimes we feel guilty we don't make people pay for this kinda thing ;)

Mm, another track by the quiet man himself, and it's another gorgeous one. Mellow trippiness, as they say, doesn't just come by laying down on a lazy afternoon and staking it out. You need to know the slow-motion science of notes not played and places not visited. You need to know when not to.

It's difficult to find anything to say about this tune, because it's just so.... mmmmm. The drums, the melodies, the style seem to mesh like Sabres of Paradise managed so well on "Smokebelch", and Substance is truly the jewel in Mono's crown. Just you wait til we start releasing his drum n bass tunes, then you'll truly freek out. :) Overstated, us? never. ;)

The boy can't help it, he just can't help it. Apologies from us to Vim! and his fans for not getting these songs out very fast at all - they were tracked much earlier this year. But at least at least they're out, and we guess you should really open wide and say 'aaahh'. Or at least 'ah?' :) Style, grace, Rita Hayworth, all that nice stuff, Vim! has it in spades. So if you've got a heart, let's club together and buy him enough diamonds to jack it all in and live on the Gold Coast forever....

Back again on the label with the mono and the 2 and the 1 and the 1, it's the finnish groove-god hymn-self with some real chilled jazzy action. why _do_ we like the jazz-chill-groove so much? it's definitely partly to do with the fact we release over the Net, and so people listen at home on their computers.. beats that sound kickass in clubs sometimes sound boring at home, and vice versa, which we think is a mistake a lot of sceners make. but with our forthcoming videogame and vinyl action...

words really don't do this one much justice. it's borderline insane, it's somewhere between the drill, the bass, the ambient, and the headfunk.. it's got those trademark weird-as-hell arpeggios in there, and it's just brilliance. then again, i'm sure we're biased? nonetheless, ridiculously good. hopefully if you're reading this you have it already. if not, go get it, for gawd's sake. heh, over and out.. oh, it's neglected because we didn't release it for a year or more, btw. more fool us :)

When our brainwaves aren't stimulated, we run the risk of becoming brain dead. Substance has negated this risk with his very own minimal response to the question "are we here?". This is possibly the deepest Mono has got into the science of nothing meaning everything - keep listening, you'll understand in the end. maybe.

Mm, here's another of Zyad's prized remixes of Vim!, and another piece of smart witty techno. It has a clock-ticking monotone to it that really begins to appeal after a while, don't you think? Then there's some sorta jazz drumming comes in a little later, and it's all agreeably offbeat. In a sorta onside way. Thanks to both of the lads - they done great.

A new year, a new song. hah. This time round minimalist techno sorta gets warped round triphop, courtesy of Substance, and a nice kinda melange gets spewed out. And am I the only one that thinks the bass sounds like a certain Neneh Cherry + Youssou N`Dour song? heh. :)

It's tricky. In some danger of becoming the Penn and Teller of the underground scene - now you see him, now you don't? With the undercurrents of the macabre but the straightahead gobsmacking in there too, it's a valid comparison, but, let's face it, Bay Tremore just ain't that.. sick. Although perhaps some of his basslines are a little.. evil :) Anyhow, in the latest instalment he takes on some of the recent mono211 releases from ramone and substance, gives them a good seeing-to, and dumps them...

Well, another excellently original release by Vim!, a remix of one of his own 4-channel tunes (which we may release at some other date), and another scorcher. zoom, zoom, zoomie zoom, the tune zooms. ;) Damn, it's such a pity that mr.vim! is not much longer for the tracking scene.. seems a shame to waste such a talent. *sigh*.

Substance strikes back with a Mono release which isn't minimalist trance. :) In fact, Substance's style extends way past tranceland (check out the melodic junglism of his Assembly96 tune, "The Hub", or indeed "Drum+Bass Frenzie"), and this time he's cooked up an intriguing tekno with metal breaks and frazzled synths piece, inspired by a certain Aphex Twin collaborator, Mike Paradinas. Nice, sorted, and damn original. Oh, and the title means something very silly in a...

First in the series of _serious_ 'quality-not-quantity' trip on Mono, this EP from Substance highlights the new directions elektronik musik is going in nowadays - think Warp, Rephlex, Squarepusher, et al. And let's face it, who else is doing this kinda complex, far-ahead stuff in 4-channel? Fifteen - love. Check da next release for the next installment of Mono's quality drive. :)

Mono's final release of 1997, most likely, and an appropriately.. nice one. :) Vim! really kicks the technique unlike anyone else, and here's another example of that fact. I mean, _what_ is going on here? Can anyone tell us? It's Aphex Twin meeting Tim Follin on a deserted road and beating the crap outta each other, we guess. Well, the debut Mono release from Substance is an EP of some of the best trance-MODs I've ever heard. Yeah, yeah, I'm biased, but who can deny that these tunes kick considerable ass? "Zenith Aura" throws the percussion round like some serious mechanical maniacs got let loose in your computer, "Monotone" phases and hits like a pipe-toking robot bad-ass mofo, and "Trips Of Orange Capsules" is flowing, experimental, and relaxing all at once. There ain't no doubt that...

From the loopy original on Mono comes a slightly more ordered, just as loopy, Monotonik remix, courtesy of Zyad... mm, thanks for making it make.. more sense? This time round a visit to the sharper end of the Mono spectrum (no blunted beatz here..), and Substance's knack for the rhythmic but different shines thru. And 'liquid wax' describes the phasing SH-101 bass which is Kuu's trademark pretty well. Watch out for more Substance stuff soon, including tunes previously performed live at raves in Finland, heh. :)

The first track from Whiskas to go out on the Mono label, and it's a large, scarily detailed remix of his good friend Substance. Never mind the size, listen to the depth - this is really stretching four channels as far as it can possibly go. Total originality is what the crowd wants, and it's what the crowd gets. :)

Does the man know no end to his beginning? More wonderfulness from Vim!, to whom this track makes perfect sense, but to the rest of us.. wow. It seems random but it's all completely mapped out on graph paper before he starts. Next to his new inventions, the spaceship and the peanut that reverses time. Could you dance to this? A return, at last, for the rather versatile Substance, and here he is demonstrating succinct knowledge of the beep and tuck. Almost mechanoid, this is somewhere between Kraftwerk and Mu-Ziq, and has those gorgeously kiddie melodies so beloved of Warp-ish characters all the way from Sir Aphex to the recently recognised Plone. Back into the fold then, and good to go. Wheeeee.

Ooch. Some serious roughness from the normally gentle and caring Substance. ;) Well, ok, he's hardly been a saint, but this is downright prosecutable. Jazz bass, twinkling hi-hats, and a buzz, buzz, buzz buzz in your eardrum bass from somewhere da other side of Pluto. The planet, not the cartoon character. Stand back before igniting.

A new Monotonik track, and this time a fine release from Kuu. Actually, this one reminds us very much of the classic Harthouse/Eye-Q style of techno, which can only be a good thing. There's enough percussion in here to stun a horse. In case people are still wondering how Mono artists manage to get so much into 4 channels, there's an utility called MOD2SMP which allows the composer to compose a whole drum-pattern in 4 channels, and then output it as a sample which can be used in just 1 channel....
